The Bradbury House Organisation offers day service provision for adults with a wide range of learning difficulties and mental health needs.
Bradbury House Day Centre is a purpose built facility which provides quality service to both residential and external service users. Situated in the grounds of one of our residential units in Brislington, Bristol, the day centre is open from 10am to 4pm (weekdays) for 47 weeks of the year
One of the primary aims of the organisation is to increase each service user’s ability level allowing for greater independence and empowerment.
Bradbury House Day Centre provides a programme of activities and courses carefully tailored to meet each individual’s needs. The courses are developed to build upon the skill base of each individual service user in fields such as artwork and life skills.
As part of our commitment to the provision of high quality day-care, staff training and development receive a high priority. Service users also benefit from much varied professional input.
Here is a sample of our day care activities::
Artwork
Artwork activities are designed to incorporate the various different projects which are formulated at the beginning of the year by both staff and service users.
Communication skills
This course develops service users’ interpersonal and communication skills. Each session is tailored to the needs of the individual by using Makaton, pictorial representations or verbal aids for example. This course is a great aid for building confidence and improving basic skill levels.
Photography
This activity is carried out on a group basis in the community. It empowers the service users in understanding all aspects of photography, from purchasing the correct camera to processing and mounting their work. Pictures are then displayed in and around the day centre and are used in future projects.
Purchasing
This activity is also run in the community. The course involves service users identifying what they want to buy and considering where they can make the purchase. Number and budgeting skills are learnt throughout the session, cumulating in the final purchase of the item.
Cooking
This activity takes place in a purpose built kitchen in the day centre.Service users learn about food and the process of preparing and cooking. In addition to improving basic cooking skills there are also opportunities to develop diet and nutritional understanding. Sessions start by the service user choosing and purchasing the ingredients for their dinner (with staff support); this can be done either by communication cards or verbally.
Swimming
This activity is held at a local swimming pool during the special needs section of the morning. Service users can learn to swim with staff support, or are free to relax and enjoy the water as they choose. This course is not solely designed to be progressive but is one with therapeutic benefit.
Massage and relaxation
This activity is held once a week and is designed to help service users relax and unwind. Service users can choose from a massage, listening to relaxing music and using other sensory equipment. The day centre is equipped with aroma fans, relaxation mats and a quiet corner to aid the session. External agencies have been used for individual specialised sessions such as Indian head massages and reflexology.
Trips out
Daily excursions are planned to suit a variety of interests; theatre, local parks, museums, cinema, bowling, etc. Bradbury House feels it is imperative to involve service users as much as possible in everyday society.
All vehicles meet stringent safety requirements and regulations.
