Bradbury House Sports Day

March 2012 - Bendalls Farm recently hosted a successful and sunny sports day, in aid of Sports Relief.

On 26 March, Bendalls Farm Daycare  hosted the Bradbury House Sports Day in aid of Sports Relief. Much preparation went into the event – there were cakes to be baked, posters to be made, a mile to be measured and a tricky obstacle course to be designed.

The weather did its part too and produced a gloriously sunny day. Spirits were high and everyone eager for the races to commence.

The first event of the day was the egg and spoon race – as much fun for the contestants as it was for the spectators. This was followed by a fun and fast 30-metre dash and then the relay race, loudly cheered on by supporters.

Next up was the obstacle course, which involved jumping over pipes, stepping into tyres, going through hoops and round posts. The wonderful welly throwing event followed; Jerry was in place with his trusted tape measure to calculate the distance of the welly throws with the winning welly travelling an impressive 73 feet.

Before the final event of the day, it was time to rest and replenish energy stores with a lovely sit-down buffet lunch provided by the farm shop. With lunch over, excitement began to mount for the much anticipated final event: the Bendalls Mile.

Everyone lined up on the track; chatter, laughter and excitement in the air. The hooter sounded and they were off. The “Bendalls Mile” took participants along the farm track and back again, with every single participant proving they could go the “extra mile” to complete the race.

Bradbury House staff were also called to participate in an obstacle course race. This seemed to reveal the more competitive side of their natures, and a hard fought race was eventually won by Jason.

The day ended with a presentation of certificates to congratulate every participant on their sporting achievements as well as to thank everyone for their efforts to raise money for Sports Relief.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the day such a success. We raised over £100 for Sports Relief. In particular we would like to thank Neal, Phil and Lacel who raised a significant portion of the funds from their own sponsors.

2011 The Greatest Hits

February 2012 – Some of the best bits – 2011

Twenty-eleven was a good year for Bradbury House with activities and adventures abounding. Here’s a look back at the wonderful memories made at all our Bradbury residences and beyond, from the year’s snowy white beginnings right to its ceremonious end.

With a snowy start to the year, The Old Rectory kicked off 2011 by building snowmen and having ecstatic snowball fights. Silver Tree Lodge opted for a more civilised affair, at the theatre, and organised a charter event in Weston to see the pantomime Cinderella.

In March the boys of Bendalls climbed onto quad bikes and set free their need for speed around the racetrack. The outing was organised by the brave Baruti who led the way with his record-breaking lap times. (We’re still not sure that he used his brakes at all.)

Come summer, and the royal wedding scheduled to be the event of the year, Bendalls Farm and Street Farm rose to the occasion and held their own royal tea parties. It is still contested whether the boys outdid the girls this round, with their lively decorations and mouth-watering buffet and cakes. The boys even did some rather splendid posing for the camera.

Summer was all thrills for Silver Tree Lodge who visited the newly built Pier in Weston where they discovered the rides (which were literally a screaming success). For Adam the thrills were to be found at Longleat Adventure Park, where he capably demonstrated his steely courage by having some very big spiders and snakes crawl and slither all over him. (We’re still cringing at the memory.)

Staff and management from The Old Rectory went a little ape at their annual team-building event – using harnesses, pulleys and pure will to swing amongst the treetops. Also on the Rectory calendar were unique events (like pig racing) and culinary achievements (grand buffets and award-winning cakes) plus a host of funfair-style stalls, races and games.

A new event in 2011, the I Can’t Believe it’s Not the Bath and West Show hosted by Bendalls Farm was an all-out success – even the weather was on top form. Visitors strolled the grounds, tried their hand at making or doing farmy things, sampled good old farm fare and bought handmade produce from the stalls. A great day out and you can believe it’s going to be even better in 2012.

Street Farm also got very busy in 2011. Not only did they continue with their classes at Silver Tree Crystal, they took their skills to new levels by progressing to glass blowing and mould making (Christmas presents sorted!).

After all their hard work, Street Farm headed for the sunny shores of Spain at the end of the year for a well-deserved break. As well as lots of sundrenched relaxation there was also some memorable celebration – Street Farm stole the show when they clambered up on stage during a Michael Jackson tribute!

Meanwhile the boys of Bendalls Farm decided to slow things down, opting for an ocean outing and a spot of fishing.

The Craftshed (a Bendalls Farm initiative) also displayed their skills to good effect when they attended a local two-day event hosted by Priddy Good Farm Shop. The Craftshed crafters sold produce handcrafted on the farm, including owl boxes, beeswax candles and glass-blown items.

Bradbury House and Cypress Lodge were the first to use the new activity centre at Cypress Lodge by hosting their Halloween party there. As well as some horrifically good costumes and ghoulishly good treats, there was also live entertainment by Steve, who treated partygoers to a display of his breakdancing skills.

The annual bonfire lived up to its reputation. This sensational farm event included a pig roast, an awards ceremony and a huge fireworks display. Always a favourite on the Bradbury House group calendar.

The year also included its fair share of barbeques, funfairs, trips to the seaside, pancakes (made by our Bendalls cooks), dressing up (for Red Nose Day), local adventures, social gatherings, parties, and bucket-loads of fun and laughter. Bring on 2012 and buckets more.

The adventures of TOR

September 2011 – Bikes, birthdays and a bunch of gorillas!

Spills and thrills on the Somerset levels

The Rectory’s recent Somerset levels cycling trip was not unlike the Tour de France! There were thrills, spills, agony and ecstasy… The cyclists set off on schedule on a sunny Tuesday morning and, stewarded by Miranda, Laura and Agnes, soon fell into a steady pace. After a few miles the group began to thin with David B falling toward the back of the group. After some wheelies of encouragement from Laura, David soon found himself back with the pack.

Dan and Annick pushed themselves to the limits and set a new pace for the group, giving way to some explosive and aggressive riding. Unfortunately for Annick this resulted in her crashing into a ditch. A few dock leaves soothed the pain of the stinging nettles and she bravely mounted her steed once more to finish the ride.

The group arrived back at Fenny castle elated and much in need of the delicious refreshments and cake to replenish their energy.

Happy Birthday Kevin!

Kevin celebrated his birthday in September and was treated to a special cake baked by Chef Angie. Chef Angie also provided some delicious party food for everyone to enjoy at the celebration held for Kevin at the Rectory. After a very enjoyable day Kevin went out for dinner with his mum and dad and received many lovely presents. A very full day of wonderful birthday treats for Kevin.

Looking For Lou  Phil and Jess took Leon, Dan, David and Kevin to Bristol to “look for Lou”. As they turned a corner on the waterfront Dan shouted, “There she is!” With her back to our search party it was easy to sneak up behind her to capture some photographic evidence. A little while later Lou was spotted again – though it appeared she had changed into a new disguise to stay one step ahead of the group.

After even more sightings the group decided that Bristol’s biggest tourist attraction had become rather tame. We’re talking of course of the 61 gorilla statues that were placed around Bristol to celebrate the 175th anniversary of Bristol Zoo Gardens. The stunning life-size Wow! Gorillas were decorated by Bristol’s artists and auctioned for charity.

The Old Rectory search party had great fun “looking for Lou” and there was much banter about the gorillas looking like Louise “Lou” Clark, manager of The Old Rectory.

After a trip to a café for some well-deserved refreshments, the group went for a wonder around M Shed, an innovative museum located on Bristol’s dockside. Leon enjoyed dressing up in old-fashioned clothing and experiencing the WWII air raid shelter. The search party returned to the Rectory with cheerful reports that they had spotted Lou and that she was expected back soon to run the unit.

The Old Rectory Racing & Picnic

20th July 2011

The Old Rectory this summer are holding a picnic for their Charter Event on the 20th July between 12 and 4pm. Fun will be had with ’Pink Piggy Racing’ keeping everyone entertained. All our homes are invited to attend.

Check back soon to find out what happened and to see pictures of the days activities.

Monkey Business

May 2011 – TOR goes APE!

The Old Rectory staff got together for a team-building session at Go Ape in the Forest of Dean – a “tree-top adventure” where people get to swing from tree to tree by using harnesses and pulleys.

Go Ape encourages visitors to put fear aside and bring out their inner daredevil. TOR staff rose to the occasion and had high adventure on the high wires, Tarzan swings and zip lines. They also adventured along the series of ladders, walkways, bridges and tunnels that criss-cross this forest area.

Not only did TOR staff have a great time, a few even managed to conquer their fears, spurred on by the encouraging words and cheers from their comrades.

It has been a fantastic and enjoyable day out with my team and I am very proud of each and every one. I believe this will enhance TOR team spirit and strengthen the bond we have

Madele – Home Manager

Had a fantastic day; a bit scary at times. The team stuck together and were so supportive to those facing their fear of heights. Cannot wait until the next team-building experience

Leah – Team Leader

A terrifying but great team-building experience

Shelly – Support worker

It was a real TREE-t!

Jamie – Support Worker

A really good day. Everyone had fun and enjoyed the experience

 Miranda – Support Worker

Holiday!

May 2011 – Kevin & Suze on holiday

It was once going to be Heather and Susan’s holiday, but when Heather decided to stay, Kevin jumped at the chance to fill her shoes! The pair headed off for their luxury seaside lodge in sunny Swanage, Dorset.

Suzie’s favourite part of the holiday was the boat trip to Wareham; she sang and laughed for the entire journey. While Kevin could barely wait for the steam train to stop before boarding for a historic train journey.

Agnes and Laura, the Bradbury House staff who accompanied the twosome, also thoroughly enjoyed the trip and are as eager for the next one.

April 2011 – Amazing Atmospherics

Atmospherics is a unique concept integrating therapy and theatre. This enriching sensory experience uses colour, imagery, music, smell and touch – creating a sensory impact linked to feelings and emotions, which for many people with complex learning disabilities are more authentic than logic.

TOR residents Daniel, Laura and Marcela attended a recent atmospherics session, while Kevin, always eager to attend every outing, joined in. Kevin and Daniel were so soothed by the calm, relaxing music that they practically dozed off toward the end of the session. Daniel is a keen enthusiast of atmospheric therapy and attends sessions every week.

The Old Rectory frequents Atmospherics regularly. If you would like to read about one of their first trips to this therapy use the link as a shortcut to go straight to it;

Thriller!

April 2011 – Jackson lives on in his Thriller show

Street Farm organised a thrilling night out in April to see the tribute Michael Jackson’s Thriller Live at the Bristol Hippodrome and invited residents from Cypress Lodge and the Old Rectory to join in on the fun.

Two-hours of non-stop hit songs in a show that pays homage to the world-class spectacle of Jackson’s legendary live performances by a talented cast and live band playing such hits as ’I Want You Back’, ‘ABC’, ‘Can You Feel It’, ‘The Way You Make Me Feel’, ‘Smooth Criminal’, ‘Beat It’, ‘Billie Jean’, ’They Don’t Care About Us and ‘Thriller’ plus many more.

Philip and Andrew from Cypress had the delight of joining the other homes in attendance. The evening was enjoyed by all who attended, everyone left in high spirits and a few even attempted to “moon walk” all the way home.

“It was amazing! Best show I’ve ever seen”

Philip

Goings on at TOR

March 2011 – Birthdays, Horses, College and Gateway

It was Susie and Annick’s birthdays in March. A trip to Horse World, a personal favourite of Susie’s was in order. They had a fantastic time, Kev and Daniel opted to join them.

Annick continues to go to college in Bristol once a week currently doing a healthy cooking course. Annick loves her cooking and really enjoys her placement; Annick is popular in her class.

Leon  and David went to the Gateway club in Cheddar, Leon has been going for a couple years now while David has only recently started. Leon is hugely popular, as well as a hit with the ladies. Recent activities have included Disco night, Skittles to Line dancing and going out for meals.

February 2011 – HorseWorld opens hearts

The weather may have been grey but that did nothing to dampen the day at HorseWorld in Bristol.

Residents of The Old Rectory visited the horse rescue and rehabilitation centre and participated in many of the activities on offer.

Visitors to HorseWorld can meet the animals, frolic in the play barn, visit the museum and adopt an animal. The recreation area also sports a Jungle Climber and an Aerial Runway.

Susan is a big lover of horses and donkeys and was very impressed with HorseWorld. She has signed up to become a member and Daniel has followed suit.

HorseWorld is currently responsible for about 140 horses, ponies and donkeys at their Bristol site and over 300 who have been re-homed throughout the South-West. They are always looking for people with room in their hearts and stables for a rescued horse or pony.
