Bradbury House Sports Day

March 2012 - Bendalls Farm recently hosted a successful and sunny sports day, in aid of Sports Relief.

On 26 March, Bendalls Farm Daycare  hosted the Bradbury House Sports Day in aid of Sports Relief. Much preparation went into the event – there were cakes to be baked, posters to be made, a mile to be measured and a tricky obstacle course to be designed.

The weather did its part too and produced a gloriously sunny day. Spirits were high and everyone eager for the races to commence.

The first event of the day was the egg and spoon race – as much fun for the contestants as it was for the spectators. This was followed by a fun and fast 30-metre dash and then the relay race, loudly cheered on by supporters.

Next up was the obstacle course, which involved jumping over pipes, stepping into tyres, going through hoops and round posts. The wonderful welly throwing event followed; Jerry was in place with his trusted tape measure to calculate the distance of the welly throws with the winning welly travelling an impressive 73 feet.

Before the final event of the day, it was time to rest and replenish energy stores with a lovely sit-down buffet lunch provided by the farm shop. With lunch over, excitement began to mount for the much anticipated final event: the Bendalls Mile.

Everyone lined up on the track; chatter, laughter and excitement in the air. The hooter sounded and they were off. The “Bendalls Mile” took participants along the farm track and back again, with every single participant proving they could go the “extra mile” to complete the race.

Bradbury House staff were also called to participate in an obstacle course race. This seemed to reveal the more competitive side of their natures, and a hard fought race was eventually won by Jason.

The day ended with a presentation of certificates to congratulate every participant on their sporting achievements as well as to thank everyone for their efforts to raise money for Sports Relief.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the day such a success. We raised over £100 for Sports Relief. In particular we would like to thank Neal, Phil and Lacel who raised a significant portion of the funds from their own sponsors.

2011 The Greatest Hits

February 2012 – Some of the best bits – 2011

Twenty-eleven was a good year for Bradbury House with activities and adventures abounding. Here’s a look back at the wonderful memories made at all our Bradbury residences and beyond, from the year’s snowy white beginnings right to its ceremonious end.

With a snowy start to the year, The Old Rectory kicked off 2011 by building snowmen and having ecstatic snowball fights. Silver Tree Lodge opted for a more civilised affair, at the theatre, and organised a charter event in Weston to see the pantomime Cinderella.

In March the boys of Bendalls climbed onto quad bikes and set free their need for speed around the racetrack. The outing was organised by the brave Baruti who led the way with his record-breaking lap times. (We’re still not sure that he used his brakes at all.)

Come summer, and the royal wedding scheduled to be the event of the year, Bendalls Farm and Street Farm rose to the occasion and held their own royal tea parties. It is still contested whether the boys outdid the girls this round, with their lively decorations and mouth-watering buffet and cakes. The boys even did some rather splendid posing for the camera.

Summer was all thrills for Silver Tree Lodge who visited the newly built Pier in Weston where they discovered the rides (which were literally a screaming success). For Adam the thrills were to be found at Longleat Adventure Park, where he capably demonstrated his steely courage by having some very big spiders and snakes crawl and slither all over him. (We’re still cringing at the memory.)

Staff and management from The Old Rectory went a little ape at their annual team-building event – using harnesses, pulleys and pure will to swing amongst the treetops. Also on the Rectory calendar were unique events (like pig racing) and culinary achievements (grand buffets and award-winning cakes) plus a host of funfair-style stalls, races and games.

A new event in 2011, the I Can’t Believe it’s Not the Bath and West Show hosted by Bendalls Farm was an all-out success – even the weather was on top form. Visitors strolled the grounds, tried their hand at making or doing farmy things, sampled good old farm fare and bought handmade produce from the stalls. A great day out and you can believe it’s going to be even better in 2012.

Street Farm also got very busy in 2011. Not only did they continue with their classes at Silver Tree Crystal, they took their skills to new levels by progressing to glass blowing and mould making (Christmas presents sorted!).

After all their hard work, Street Farm headed for the sunny shores of Spain at the end of the year for a well-deserved break. As well as lots of sundrenched relaxation there was also some memorable celebration – Street Farm stole the show when they clambered up on stage during a Michael Jackson tribute!

Meanwhile the boys of Bendalls Farm decided to slow things down, opting for an ocean outing and a spot of fishing.

The Craftshed (a Bendalls Farm initiative) also displayed their skills to good effect when they attended a local two-day event hosted by Priddy Good Farm Shop. The Craftshed crafters sold produce handcrafted on the farm, including owl boxes, beeswax candles and glass-blown items.

Bradbury House and Cypress Lodge were the first to use the new activity centre at Cypress Lodge by hosting their Halloween party there. As well as some horrifically good costumes and ghoulishly good treats, there was also live entertainment by Steve, who treated partygoers to a display of his breakdancing skills.

The annual bonfire lived up to its reputation. This sensational farm event included a pig roast, an awards ceremony and a huge fireworks display. Always a favourite on the Bradbury House group calendar.

The year also included its fair share of barbeques, funfairs, trips to the seaside, pancakes (made by our Bendalls cooks), dressing up (for Red Nose Day), local adventures, social gatherings, parties, and bucket-loads of fun and laughter. Bring on 2012 and buckets more.

Carnival time

November 2011 – A spectacular and “smashing” carnival

The Somerset Carnivals are highly regarded as the largest illuminated procession in the world, so it was no surprise to see the girls of Street Farm totally delighted with the spectacular show.

The Street Farm girls have been fortunate to enjoy a few carnivals this year, including a day of good weather at Glastonbury, and said they had a “smashing” time at the Somerset Carnival where they watched about a hundred carts go by, stopping only to enjoy a burger to replenish their energy.

The carnival clubs put a lot of effort into building their carts, working on them throughout the year. Some carts use up to 30,000 light bulbs. The carnival has a new theme each year, which is kept secret until the carnival makes its first appearance at Bridgwater. The procession itself stretches to distances of around two miles, taking a good two hours to pass at any point.

The carnival takes place each November, in towns such as Bridgwater (home of the carnival), Weston and Glastonbury, among others. And has done for centuries – the carnival forms part of the Guy Fawkes celebrations, which date back some 400 years.

Street farm vacaciones en España

October 2011 – Street Farm girls escape the cold for warm España

With the weather across England turning colder and the nights setting in earlier, a trip to Spain seemed the sensible thing to do! The girls of Street Farm, along with three staff members, packed their bags and headed for a lovely week-long sunny holiday in the beautiful Benidorm, a coastal town on the Costa Blance (White Coast).

The Spanish weather was glorious and the girls spent most of their afternoons on the beach – alternating between sunbathing and refreshing swims in the ocean. The trip also included a fair share of cultural experiences, with a coach trip to a toy museum and a much enjoyed wine and chocolate tasting evening.

Helen also celebrated her birthday during the trip, which called for a special night out. Donning her wig and birthday glasses, Helen headed out with the girls for a night of dancing and karaoke – with Kelly and Sara enthusiastically joining in on the chorus!

The girls also got in a show – the Michael Jackson Tribute – which they all thoroughly enjoyed. Helen, Tiffany and Kelly even managed to join in on stage! It was a memorable night and trip. The girls say they had a great time, and thanks to all the wonderful food and drink, may have brought home a few extra pounds along with all the great memories.

What Street Farm have been up to.

September 2011 – Crystal making, train rides and sadly a lack of balloons

No balloons but lots of fun at the Bristol Balloon Fiesta

The Street Farm girls visited the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta in August, Europe’s biggest balloon event, to see some 100 hot air balloons take to the skies. The trip was hosted by Cypress Lodge who also attended on the day, with some of the homes making an appearance as well.

Alas bad weather and high winds grounded the balloons for the day but fortunately the girls still made the most of it – enjoying the rides, arcades and shopping stalls, which are all part of the exciting annual fiesta.

The Draycott/Weymouth Express

It rolls around each year, and with much excitement the Street Farm girls hop on board for the Draycott to Weymouth trip, organised annually by Draycott village. The girls enjoyed the sands and safe water at Weymouth Beach, hailed as “some of the finest in Great Britain”. It was a wonderful day out in nature soaking up this beautiful part of our coastline.

Street Farm goes Crystal

The Street Farm girls continue to attend weekly classes at Silver Tree Crystal, developing their skills and enjoying the joyful creativity of crystal making. The girls have been busy with mould making and glass blowing. Glass blowing involves inflating molten glass into a bubble with the aid of a blowpipe or blow tube. This novel glass forming technique takes careful concentration and a resistance to heat but once mastered produces spectacular results. The Street Farm girls are fast becoming masterful crystal makers.

Street Farm’s Murals

July 2011 – Murals with a message

A few of our Bradbury House girls took part in a special project in July, creating a beautiful wall mural at Victoria Park in Frome.

The open day in Frome marked the official opening of the UK mural project with Frome’s Openstorytellers also participating on the day. The colourful event featured art, words, music and drama, all as an expression of the hopes, dreams and challenges of people with disabilities.

Our Bradbury House girls Clare, Helen and Kelly painted on the day and even got up on stage to perform the song True Colours, with much approving applause from the audience.

The mural project is a joint venture run by Community Murals and the UK Disabled People’s Council (UKDPC) who are helping to create murals in areas of England that reflect disabled people’s hopes and aspirations and the barriers that prevent them from realising their dreams.

Thriller!

April 2011 – Jackson lives on in his Thriller show

Street Farm organised a thrilling night out in April to see the tribute Michael Jackson’s Thriller Live at the Bristol Hippodrome and invited residents from Cypress Lodge and the Old Rectory to join in on the fun.

Two-hours of non-stop hit songs in a show that pays homage to the world-class spectacle of Jackson’s legendary live performances by a talented cast and live band playing such hits as ’I Want You Back’, ‘ABC’, ‘Can You Feel It’, ‘The Way You Make Me Feel’, ‘Smooth Criminal’, ‘Beat It’, ‘Billie Jean’, ’They Don’t Care About Us and ‘Thriller’ plus many more.

Philip and Andrew from Cypress had the delight of joining the other homes in attendance. The evening was enjoyed by all who attended, everyone left in high spirits and a few even attempted to “moon walk” all the way home.

“It was amazing! Best show I’ve ever seen”

Philip

Myths & Legends with Street Farm

March 2011 – Story time with the girls of Street Farm

Our weekly storytelling sessions at the Wells Adult Learning Centre see classic tales such as The Old Woman Who Swallowed A Fly and Cinderella come to life through the use of masks and puppets.

The Street Farm girls take such delight in the tales – retelling the stories from memory using their own words. Helped along by tutor Louise, Rebecca and Helen have done brilliantly in their roles as Cinderella (Rebecca) and the ugly sister (Helen).

The storytelling sessions go a long way in building confidence and we look forward to the day our Street Farm girls have confidence enough to visit local schools to retell the fairytales they have learnt.

Street Farm @ Silver Tree Crystal

February 2011 – Street Farm get creative with Silver Tree Crystal

Every Wednesday the girls of Street Farm visit Silver Tree Crystal where their creativity is set free in the making of beautiful, unique glass objects such as bowls and pendants.

Silver Tree Crystal is family-run business based in Edington, Somerset with “a passion for designing and producing handmade crystal”. Their design-led creations are made using traditional glassmaking methods with 24% lead crystal, which has superb brilliance and clarity.

Tiff, Lisa and Kim have spent many hours in the Edington workshop working on their unique animal-shaped bowls. These special items will make their way to the “I Can’t Believe it’s Not the Bath & West Show” where they will be on sale. Be early if you want to get your hands on one of these rare pieces!

Red Nose Day!

March 2011 – A day in PJ’s

To celebrate Red Nose Day residents at Bradbury House and Street Farm decided to spend the day wearing their red noses and their pyjamas! While Street Farm cuddled up with nibbles to watch Comic Relief on telly, the staff of Bradbury House ventured out…

It was Katie Fern’s fabulous idea. Bradbury House staff, clad in pyjamas and red noses, wandered around the Bristol city centre without speaking a word for hours. The funny crew raised £250 for Comic Relief 2011. Well done! We tried to get a quote off Katie about this extraordinary event but alas, she was halfway through a sponsored silence!
